pptp performance/speed

how should the pptp server perform when transferring files as compared to ftp? how 
dependent is it on processor power? i'm noticing painfully slow file transfer 
performance (probably less than 10% of ftp speed for the same files). my e-smith 
server is a p150 running 4.1b3. is this a potential bug/misconfiguration or just the 
nature of pptp?
