Release Candidate 1 of the e-smith server and gateway version 4.1
The e-smith development team is pleased (and relieved) to announce the
availability of the first (and we hope last) release candidate of our
server and gateway software. Unless significant problems are found, this
will become version 4.1 which will be released as soon as possible.
This release incorporates bug fixes for all problems reported for release
4.1beta4, and also includes the recent security update to the bind DNS
daemon.
Note: There is a small visible feature change that you need to be aware
of. We have decided to be more conservative in phasing out the local
domain prefix of "e-smith" in DNS names for machines on the local network,
including the server. For systems being upgraded, machines on the local
network will be known as pc-xxxx.e-smith.domain.name, whereas for new
installs, they will be known as pc-xxxx.domain.name. This will cause the
least possible disruption for systems in production use which are
upgraded.
If you upgrade a system and do not want to keep the "e-smith" component of
the local DNS names, log in as "root" and execute these commands:
/sbin/e-smith/db configuration set LocalDomainPrefix ""
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event console-save
killall named
exit
e-smith version 4.1rc1 is available for download as an ISO image from
ftp://ftp.e-smith.org/pub/e-smith/dev/e-smith-4.1rc1/ and is also
currently available for direct network install from the rawhide directory
ftp://ftp.e-smith.org/pub/e-smith/dev/rawhide. It should also be available
from mirror sites tomorrow.
