It's worse than that, Jim. You shouldn't be using "service named restart",
and it shouldn't be effective if you do. We run named as a supervised
service from inittab. If the name server dies, another should be spawned
to take its place.
To kill the current running named, so that a new one starts:
killall named
To restart most other e-smith services, which run from SysV init startup
scripts, use:
/etc/rc7.d/Sxxblah restart
Do not use "service"; it may work most of the time, but doesn't use the
e-smith configuration database, and will therefore do some unqanted things
from time to time.

Yours is the first report of a reliability problem with named.
