  | You should also have "05printer" in that directory. If it isn't there, you
  | do not have a complete install.

it's there 05printer just didn't mention it

  | No, we don't store /etc/printcap anywhere. It's recreated by combining
  | database entries with the templates.

here's part of my postinstall.log
/etc/e-smith/events/post-install/S05init-accounts[478]: /home/e-smith/accounts:
OLD printers=(undefined)
/etc/e-smith/events/post-install/S05init-accounts[478]: /home/e-smith/accounts:
NEW printers=sy<142>/etc/e-smith/events/post-install

why (undefined) people have been printing for 3 weeks just fine..so they were
there. In your testing if it restores /etc/printcap then it's no big deal.
Thought it was a bug..guess not.

  |
  | The accounts database (/home/e-smith/accounts) has records for all your
  | printers/users/groups/i-bays/pseudonyms. And /etc/printcap gets built from
  | the database values when you re-install.

So the accounts database isn't backed up on the "create reinstallation disk"
only if you backup user data correct?
