Eric,

To send mail/set up website,

It's really helpful if you have a static IP.

1. you need a domain name
2. you need DNS records MX & A set up.
3. you need to know your static IP address of the Esmith box.

And just because you can reach a box via IP address doesn't mean you are
stealthy. Trust me, cablemodem's get scanned all the time. Usually by
people on the same @home connection as you.

You can use dynamic IP addresses as well... and they work perfectly. Go to
dyndns.org and sign up with them. Then configure ESSG to accept dyndns.org
in the console mode. Presto, instant mail and web services! You can then
have [EMAIL PROTECTED] as your email and stealth.dyndns.org as your
website.

Allen:

Thanks for your suggestions.
I fear I was not clear enough in my original post:
I don't want dynamic DNS service... this box is to
remain "hidden" from name services to the outside
world... it's a "home" service so it's just being
used for it's gateway and internal server properties.
There IS an interface to the outside world but as
far as @home knows it's just another PC on their
network. It browses the web, sends email, POPs
email, etc.

Although there is a web server on the box it's
access is via IP address only so it's not really
visible to the whole world (unless they just guess
the IP).

I've subscribed to this list for several weeks,
read the posts and reviewed the e-smith docs, both
with the system and on-line.

The reason I'm posting here is because I cannot
find in any of that documentation how to do
what I want: a "stealth" box. That and the Qmail
not working correctly.

Maybe I HAVE to have a dynamic DNS to identify
the domain I'm "in" before the e-smith server will
function correctly?
