Building, testing and updating kernels is a huge task. We make use of
existing packages rather than building our own so we can focus on where
we can "add value" - the management layer (templates, actions, web panels)
provided by e-smith/SME Server.

All of the details you mentioned can be found in the usual Linux resources. 
The only specific detail needed is that SME Server V5 uses kernel version
2.2.19-7.0.8 And that kernel is the unmodified RedHat kernel package.

The simple solution is to use supported hardware.
