just another quick 'real-world' example to add to the fray...

my domain name (plexnet.com) used to belong to a now defunct isp in oregon.  
before they went bankrupt, a number of their customers used their e-mail 
accounts to visit every last porn site on the internet.  valid, non-spam 
messages to these accounts are returned to sender, but i also get 200 to 300 
"Hi. This is the qmail-send program at plexnet.com.  I tried to deliver a 
bounce message to this address, but the bounce bounced" messages a day due to 
invalid forged 'Sender" headers...

i handle this using filters (in kmail) for my admin e-mail account.  i don't 
see any other way...
