I've been kicking around for a while the idea of an "emergency
restore" system for e-smith/SME. The way I envision it, you'd boot
off whatever medium (boot floppy or CD), and it would automatically
(after confirmation) repartition and reformat the hard drive, and
then do a full restore from tape. I'd eventually like to see this
included as part of the installation CD as another option on the
setup menu (instead of just install/upgrade, it'd be
install/upgrade/restore), but for the time being, I think something
simpler might be in order.
To begin, I'm thinking of creating a pair of boot disks which would
have the necessary files to get the restore going. Scripting the
restore process itself seems like it should be pretty
straightforward. I'm not sure about the partitioning, though--can
fdisk be scripted? If not, is there another way of automating that?
I've looked at kickstart, but that seems to be more related to
installation, whereas I wouldn't be "installing" anything (in the
redhat sense).
This is still in early planning stages, so I'd appreciate any
feedback (especially including suggestions of resources, either
documentation or other software that already does something similar).
