I've been looking for a way to allow normal email access
over the internet without exposing plain-text passwords.
What about pop access?

Did you look at Cyrus?  From other comparisons I got the
impression that it has better performance than others
because it keeps an index of the files.  It's main
disadvantages are that you don't have access to standard
unix mailbox files if you log in, and it looks complicated
to configure.  Neither of these would matter for SME if
someone packages it.
