Plenty of people will recommend _Learning Perl_ by Randal Schwartz and
Tom Phoenix. It's a perfectly fine book, but I tend to recommend 
Nigel Chapman's "Perl: A Programmer's Companion", which is more
oriented towards people that are already competent programmers but
don't know Perl.

Avoid the SAMS "Teach Yourself..." books and Dummies books and similar
books, with one exception -- Clinton Pierce's _Teach Yourself Perl In
24 Hours_ is particularly good for that genre. It must have snuck past
SAMS's inverse-quality-control editors. :-)
