I had exactly the same problem with the same processor. For some reason 1.6 GHz P-IV processors get wrongly detected as SMP-capable. The work around for this is to change the default in /etc/lilo.conf to esmith-up. (See http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg09442.html for my message and its replies.)
