You will probably keep the ports for a while longer - they are cheap and easy 
to handle (because they are fixed by the southbridge). ISA is uglier because 
there is so much crap hardware, and the power situation is bad.

USB on 2.2 is undermaintained, but keyboards should be OK. The acm driver for 
the modem is probably a bit more marginal. I have both, but haven't done any 
tests.
