Adding Internationalisation costs, both in effort and processing (which may impact display speed). We've got various ideas of where things could be sped up, but I18N isn't going to go away. Just pointing at FormMagick doesn't help much - you can't remove I18N and still have 5.5 :-) During our testing we found that the 5.5 manager was not appreciably slower on typical hardware. Many of our test boxes are P133 machines - hardly modern or typical. As usual, more RAM helps.
