I agree - first.last and first_last are auto-created. We automatically
create pseudonyms for these and first.last will almost always exceed 12
characters, and using them as usernames does cause breakage when working
with older Windows systems - there are lots of them around.

While technically correct, I disagree with the statement as it complicates
internationalisation, which is a big concern outside North America. 5.5
has been out for many months now and 5.6 is under active development - 
it's time to upgrade.
