The only problem with ntop is that it is very hard to get a good idea of how
much information is being passed from the client machine to the internet as
ntop takes a reading of ALL information, like today I copied 300 MB from my
machine to my SME box, and in ntop my traffic useage shows 328 MB now I know
for a fact that 300 MB was internal traffic.

You might be after SARG, it allows you to see which users access which sites
and how much they downloaded through squid, but you have to use squid, plus
it only shows ftp/http traffic, no other protocols are measured I _think_.
In my case I also use squid auth so in my SARG reports I get usernames
instead of IP's as IP's are worth nothing on a DHCP'd network.

I did a quick search on the net and on the e-smith site, has or is
anyone
developing a contrib that does traffic accounting for e-smith. i have
been
looking at alot of accounting packages as i wasnt to monitor the traffic
over
ADSL connection within a given period and wanted to know if somone had
done some
work on this before i started
