With a bit of dabbling with snmp (now standard with 5.6) why not use
http://bjorn.swift.st/traffic/

EG:-

Total Traffic
Choose Period and Logfile
Logs: _ Hayes 56K Modem
      _ 100baseT Ethernet
(Day, Month, Year)

From: __.__.__
Til: __.__.__

Which leads to a web page with:-

Bits In 38.4 Gbits
Avg. Bits In 15.5 Kbits

Bits Out 28.2 Gbits
Avg. Bits Out 11.4 Kbits

Bytes In 4.8 GBytes
Bytes Out 3.5 GBytes

ETHERNET 01.11.2002 - 01.12.2002

======================================

It's usually within 5% of the ISP's traffic logs, possibly because of
reconnection traffic spikes or whatever...
(The ISP said 4706.81MBs for the same period)
