Hi there That is a great idea. I have just started work again on LDAP replication and in complement to that a Backup (SAMBA) Domain controller. Your project and my project may just have some common goals....
Has anyone out there got any similar environment requirements? What I need to know or find out is there any method of 'easily' updating all of E-Smith's user accounts via LDAP? The only way that I can think of is to write my own perl script making heavy use of the Net::LDAP modules, and checking the directory often for new/modified/deleted user accounts, while running the appropriate E-Smith DB commands. With such a system, administration can be conducted via the LDAP directory without having to make any manual changes on each E-Smith server, it also opens the door to other developments like having individual mail/web accounts on remote servers and seamless DNS updates. I've investigated the methods of using NIS like functions from LDAP, but it doesn't solve the issue of updating things like the /home/e-smith/accounts file amongst others. Greatly appreciated.
