I have recently started to investigate alternative sources of funding
for Freenet. I decided to do this after noticing that really dumb
charities seem to get hundreds of thousands of dollars from various
foundations, just imagine what we could do with $300,000.

Historically we have not viewed ourselves the way that most charitable
projects do. We have been fortunate in that our core resource,
intelligent software developers willing to work for nothing, have been
in sufficient supply.

I think, however, that the pre-Matthew period of inactivity, and the
energy which invigorated the project from Matthew's full-time efforts,
highlight the benefits of financial funding of the project.

We have been able to just-about cover Matthew's living expenses. With
Oskar, Matthew, and Tavin, we set a precedent that those paid by the
project should be paid on the understanding that:

1) They work full-time on the project
2) The amount paid should be sufficient to cover their living expenses

Looking around, there are many projects which, IMHO, are scarcely a
shadow of what we have achieved, and can achieve in the future, which
recieve hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding.

I have already begun to apply for this kind of funding. If we get it,
things could rapidly become very exciting. I will keep the list posted.

Ian.
