It is worth noting that having more references in the DS may not always be a good thing - as if a node has too many references then each individual reference would be tested so infrequently that a node wouldn't get a chance to build up an idea of that reference's reliability. I wouldn't think that any more than 200 references should be necessary but people can report their experiences.
