Richard,

Great to have you on board, we have been sorely missing a Debian
maintainer.

A few things I think are important:

The freenet.jar file, basically the bytecode binary that contains
Freenet, is updated on a near daily basis, actually two versions are
available:

  http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/freenet-latest.jar
    and
  http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/freenet-unstable-latest.jar

One problem with the debian packages is that they try to track the
main Freenet releases, but in doing so users lose out on the often
valuable bugfixes available in the snapshots. As such, there should
be an easy way for a debian user to update to the latest stable or
unstable .jar file.

Another issue is what version of Java to use. Kaffe works with
Freenet most of the time, others can comment on that, but
unfortunately for real reliability we must still rely on Sun's Java
Runtime Environment.

I am sure others will have their comments too,

Kind regards,

Ian.
