It could be a long time before gcj or kaffe (they're working together,
now, mostly) is able to run the nio code.  Freenet 0.5.2 is pretty
much going to require Sun Java 1.4.1, period, no alternatives.

(Hmm, does IBM's Java handle nio?  I don't know of anyone who's been
using IBM Java with Freenet lately.)
