Maybe I could take this approach - if prog can do fcp handshake on port 8481 - freenet is found - else - browse 'network neighbourhood' to get hostnames of other boxen in lan - if prog does successful FCP handshake with one of those other boxen on the LAN - freenet is found - if freenet is found - confirm details with user - else - offer to download/install it

Thoughts?

I would say jsut probe localhost:8481. If you find a Freenet node, just continue. If there isn't one there, prompt for the node address and port. Anyone who has set up Freenet to listen to FCP requests on any other host/port, will know what to plug in.

Personally, I think it would be better to prompt for the host/port anyway, pre-populated with localhost/8481. Include a message says "If you don't knwo what this is, just click OK"
