Sure it's fundamental but I still think simpler systems are easier to
debug. For example, lots of people use bittorrent. People want a good CDN.
Freenet is intended to be more than a CDN but that is what it has to be
before anything else. Nobody wants an anonymous system that can't
distribute/retrieve their data. They do want a CDN. If you can then make
that CDN anonymous, all the better.  I think it would have made sense to
get the routing stuff working first and there would have been a sizeable
userbase to test it and then add encryption, anonymity, etc. I know, it's
a moot point now and you purists (however impractical) will probably flame
me but I haven't survived 15 years on the Internet by being thin skinned.
