I'm not saying we need to implement 1:1 now, but if this ping utility
can give us a sense of how viable it is (ie. how long does it take
for a message to reach a random location - and return to us), then it
would be useful to know.

The problem is we don't want 1:1 messaging before we have pub/sub or
passive requests. But it may be useful as a network diagnostic tool...

Well, before we remove it, I would be interested to know what we can
learn from it. For example, what is the average ping time for a
network location? This could help us to determine the viability of
real-time messaging in Freenet.

The node still includes routed ping support. This essentially is

to ping a location. The ping is routed, within the limits of HTL.
It was
used for testing the code in quasi-simulation, and may still be
useful
for that purpose. The question is, should it be disabled on the main
network? It is not sufficiently reliable to be a useful
communication
mechanism, especially when you consider that it is directed to a
node location, not to a node identity... It might be possible to
ping
locations from the list captured for network size estimation, and
thereby estimate how many of them are still online. However, it is
unreliable, and spoofable.
Is it a security risk?
