Or perhaps searching keywords over nodes within a hop or two?
I am a person who is "pushing" for this thing, but two hops would be horrible, since you will have to trust a person further away from you. I will have some level of trust in friends of my friends, but when it's friend of friend of friend it then i don't have much trust in them at all. Look at WAYN/Hi5 and other such "friendship networks" you try to follow links and you see that friends of your friends sometimes share your views and ideas, but by the second hop it is almost like a general population, which you trust as much as the stranger.

Well, do you trust your friends to tell you about mutual friends' node
references? You may not want to tell everyone you know that you are
running Freenet.

So a flag meaning "expose my name to nearby peers and let them send me
messages" might be useful, no? It would let people see that some of
their friends are already on the network, confirm this out of band
(without having to tell everyone you know about freenet), and then
connect internally.

Interesting. Of course currently many people have names for the nodes which are as non-descriptive as their frost identities.
