I don't know of statistics for NNTP usage these days, but there are
still some major users of newsgroups. Google groups, for example, is
built on newsgroups and Gmane has significant newsgroup integration. In
my personal experience I know of a few groups where non-technical people
still hang out.
To me it matters more that newsgroups are kind of "forums done right."
I've yet to see any web forum that does its job as well as newsgroups
can, and the interface independence NNTP gives is pretty valuable as well.
Programs like Frost ask people to run clients... why not ask them to run
newsgroup readers as their clients?
