I've recently read the Wikipedia article about the Unity game engine [1] and was positively surprised that it uses Mono for its script engine. Given that Unity is used in a lot of commercial projects, this suggest that Mono should be sorta usable by now, which is nice. I don't know what this means for MonoDevelop, but you might investigate it. Notice that the article says "Unity ships with a customized version of MonoDevelop for debugging scripts."
