Done. I check if port 19114 is open when the app launches. If it's not a
dialog urges you to start your node by pressing the 'launch' button.
Under the configure tab there is also a 'launch node' button. There's no
'kill node' button and there shouldn't be. Nor do I do any error
checking if the node launched or not. Someone who can't do a ps -A has
no chance of fixing a broken local node anyway.

Coding madly? Nah, that was last week. Picture someone who's only coding
experience is a few scripting languages and some easy high school C++
courses trying to learn rudimentary GTK+/glade, string manipulation,
file IO, SHA hash functions, simple encryption techniques, signal
handlers (IPC), ... well, you get the point. Think multiple 32 hour days
of virtually uninterrupted hacking and shoutcast trance music. All for a
simple wrapper app! And now I've gotta learn pthreads!

Oh, and I found a postscript copy of Applied Cryptography online today.
Anyone who can sit through that math is either completely insane or
endowed with a IQ of a magnitude one-twentieth of which on the Richter
scale could shred the Earth into little tiny molten bits.
