But by that logic, why select metadata as a special case - it is really
just a part of the data, but a part which we have kindly standardized
the format of.  If anything, it is the metadata that is the least likely
part of the data to vary.

Appending the metadata key to the CHK strikes me as an inelegant
solution to a non-problem.
