From: "Oskar Sandberg" <[email protected]> > There are other java to native compilers - move along.
Move along? Where to? Can you name one native java compiler which: 1) Can be obtained freely/cheaply? 2) Will successfully build the fred 0.4 code? 3) Can generate a truly standalone windows exe? I spent many hours yesterday searching for native java compilers, and came up with sites like http://www.geocities.com/marcoschmidt.geo/java.html This page lists several java compilers, and pages of links to other compilers. However, all the viable windows compilers cost a fortune, and don't offer an evaluation version (unless you go through a troublesome process of 'applying' for an evaluation copy). One exception is the Excelsior-Jet compiler - but its evaluation version produces EXE files that require an external JVM. Now, as for Kaffe, I'll be looking to see if there's a Kaffe for windows which can work with fred 0.4. Penultimately, on reading the Sun Java Runtime license, sections 2 and 3 of the Supplemental License Terms appear to authorise redistribution. I'll be writing to Sun to ask for clarification, because there may be scope to legally revive the 'with java' windows installer I produced some months ago. To anyone reasonably technical, it's nothing to download and install a jvm. But to most Napster/Gnutella exiles, eyes will glaze over and they'll move on to other file-sharing progs like OpenNap. Lastly, the concerns you've raised about the incorrect buffer positions with exceptions - is a workaround possible?
