The thing is that there is only one working free software JVM, and
that is Kaffe, and Kaffe only (of course) supports Java 1.1  Thus, if
we abandon pure Java 1.1 support, we are practically tying ourselves
to proprietary software.  While "open source" supporters may not have
much of a problem with this, this does not promote real software
freedom in any respect whatsoever - in this respect, abandoning Java
1.1 is purely harmful.
