If we want to allow both http and https at the same time that will require a 
little more code changes in TR. The 'PortAttribute' of the Connector is used in 
the code to enforce the access to the API. Currently it assumes there is only 
one connector labeled as 'ApiPort'. Without that you could visit the /crs API 
through any of the Connectors. No big deal. It can be done. 
For all other cases, I believe that in reality most CDNs will manage the 
'server.xml' through operations. You would switch between https and http just 
by dropping a new server.xml file and restarting.
