1. It’s Time!  Annual Meeting - Death Valley 2006 Call for Papers/ Registration/ Membership.  You’ve procrastinated long enough.  Make your plans to attend the 38th Annual Meeting of the DFC, 16 to 19 November 2006, hosted by the National Park Service at Furnace Creek Visitor Center in Death Valley National Park, California. DEADLINE FOR EARLY REGISTRATION AND ABSTRACT SUBMITTAL IS SEPTEMBER 3, 2006.  Everything you need to know is online at http://www.desertfishes.org/meetings/2006/call.html .  (Tell your colleagues!)

2. Online Store now accepts only credit card payments.  Checks and Purchase Order payments were too much of a hassle to process through our automated system.  These “old fashioned” payments can still be made through snail mail to our membership secretary, Heidi.  For all the info, see the instructions at http://www.desertfishes.org/meetings/DFC_store_instructions.html .

3. Business Meeting reminders.  The annual DFC business meeting will be held Friday afternoon, November 17.  Three Executive Committee offices are open for elections: Membership Secretary, Areas Coordinator, and Member-at-Large.  You can find descriptions of these offices at Article II of our bylaws (http://www.desertfishes.org/general/dfc_cons.html#_Toc90779467).  While nominations can be made at anytime, including from the floor of the meeting, we encourage you to submit nominations ahead of time (include the required short bio) for consideration by the membership.  This can be done through any member of the ExComm, but best to use your current Member-at-Large, Chuck Minckley at [EMAIL PROTECTED]  We’ll send a compiled list of all nominations out to DFC-L a week or so before the meeting.  A list of current ExComm members is online at http://www.desertfishes.org/general/excomm.html .

Also, remember any proposed resolutions for consideration at the DFC meeting must be submitted using the same process (online form on the website) for submitting abstracts for presentations and provided by the September 3 deadline.  Instructions are on pages 6-7 of the minutes from the 2004 Business Meeting, available online at http://www.desertfishes.org/proceed/2004/Business_minutes_2004.pdf .

4. We need a volunteer for website maintenance. After years of thankless work, Dean Hendrickson has resigned his duties as the go-to guy for all DFC online information.  Dean needs a break.  If you are willing and able to take on the duties of maintaining the DFC website, please consider volunteering in this capacity.  Contact Dean directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

5. Thanks to the Dallas Zoo.  DFC was honored to receive our first Patron Membership recently – a $1,000 membership from the Dallas Zoo and Dallas Aquarium at Fair Park.  This is a huge boost and comes at an opportune time as you’ll hear about some exciting new plans at the business meeting to restructure DFC finances.  (That’s Dallas, TEXAS, by the way!)

6. Bargain Lifetime Memberships – get them while they last!  Don’t forget to take advantage of the big discount on Lifetime Memberships – a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will disappear September 3!  Up to $250 off the regular price of $625.  Email Heidi for more information at [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

Have a great day and see you in Death Valley,  Nathan
