Discourse on the Ten Dhammas

Thus I have heard, once the Exalted One was staying at Savathi, in Jeta’s Gove, the monastery of Anathapindika. There the Exalted One addressed the monks: "Monks!"

"Venerable Sir!" the monks replied.

The Exalted One said:
"There are ten things, monks, which one who has gone forth [into homelessness] should reflect upon always. What then?

'I am now changed into a different mode of life [from that of a layman]' should be reflected upon always.
'My life depends on others' should be reflected upon always.
'I must now behave in a different manner' should be reflected upon always.
'Does my mind upbraid me regarding the state of my virtue?' should be reflected upon always.
'Do my discerning fellow monks, having tested me, reproach me regarding the state of my virtue?' should be reflected upon always.
'There will be a parting and seperation from all those who are dear and loving to me' should be reflected upon always.
'Of kamma I am constituted. Kamma is my inheritence; kamma is my origin; kamma is my kinsman; kamma is my refuge. Whatever kamma I perform, be it good or bad, to that I shall be heir' should be reflected upon always.
'How do I spend my nights and days?' should be reflected upon always.
'Do I take delight in solitude?' should be reflected upon always.
'Have I gained super-human knowledge which can be specially known to noble ones so that later when I am questioned by fellow monks I will not be embarrassed?' should be reflected upon always.
These, monks, are ten things which one who has gone forth should reflect upon always."

Thus spoke the Exalted One. The monks were pleased with and appreciated the Exalted One’s words.
