I was using "y" rather than "m," but that turned out not to be the
problem. I got looking into my kernel source directory and realized
that I hadn't run "make oldconfig" when bringing forward my old
.config file from a previous kernel version. Once I did this and
recompiled the kernel, everything worked fine.
