Looking at 2.0 patch level 18, the software expects a hostname field coming
from the client in order to determine Microsoft / non-Microsoft for null
termination. Windows CE does not send a hostname (or any other options :()
although it still requires a null terminator.
Another field which a client can send is option 60, the Vendor class
identifier, which is also a string. Since it may be possible to have a
Windows client be configured with no TCP/IP hostname (haven't tried), it
would be nice to add a check for option 60 as well. Of course, the CE case
won't be fixed here, but one can hope :).
Finally having a grouping based upon class identifier would give a non-MAC
specific way of specifying groups of clients together. By having such a
grouping, an option in the config file can also be added to force Microsoft
mode, rather than looking for Nulls.
A couple of questions:
1. Has anyone gotten dhcpd to feed Windows CE clients successfully (or does
anyone have a patch that allows it).
2. Does anyone have a patch that allows the Vendor class identifier be used
to group clients together?
If not, I may have to do it anyway and make the patch available, but I don't
want to reinvent something already done.
