I must admit that this discussion about network terminology is very entertaining.
Some are refering to newer definitions that haven't always been the same, 15 years 
from now a repeater is
what now is called a amplifier.
For me is a bridge and a switch exactly the same.
I think that the reason for using the word switch is to point out that you have some 
kind of concurrency like
a telefone switch. Some old bridges, even with more than two interface, could only 
send half duplex traffic
on one interface at any given time.

The orginal question about the Linux bridging capabillities look like a question to 
the Linux kernel or Linux
networking mailing list.
