I have the same problem here, Sun Ultra 10, Creator 3D and Solaris 7.
Sometimes I can set the foreground color to a very dark red, but most of
the time both colors are black. This happens on CDE as well as with the
fvwm2 window manager.
The versions of the support libraries are as follows:

By the way, I am working on a 24bit screen, if that matters.
