Yeah, try telling your boss ( and the rest of the department also ) that
they should convert all their network diagrams to a format that dia
could understand because you not feel like running visio, or send
her/him some strange format that doesn't automatically open visio when
he/she clicks on.  : )

Other (better?) solutions are out there, but like it or not, visio is by
*far* the industry standard.  Therefore compatibility could only do
competition (eg. dia and the others you mention ) good.
