Digestion relies upon the volume of feedstock available and the density of suitable microbes. Should your volume decrease throughout the seasons, the density of microbes will adjust to the reduced input. It takes about three weeks to complete a digestion cycle, and during this time organisms feed, breed and die. They will organize a regime to suit circumstances. If they run out of food, they will simply go dormant. They are always there somewhere, waiting.....
