Hi,
Thanks very much for the info. My post was vague because DDN wouldnt let me put anything specific about my company, our mission, etc
SimDesk's mission is to provide utility computing to the masses, at a low cost, thereby providing digital inclusion. I included a quick blurb below.
We are partnering with non-profits as obviously a for profit company cannot request funds directly. We are just finding it challenging and slow to get our relationships with the non-profits solidified, scope out a concept, request the funds etc. I was hoping to gain information for others who have been in position, working to secure funding with non-profit partners (ideally in the field of information technology)
I agree with your assessment on local initiatives which is why we are working at the local level as well as city and state wide.
Thanks very much for your feedback, it was very helpful
Thanks Dorean
*SimDesk is leveraging a new kind of computing called utility computing to eliminate barriers to technology use. We call what we do Community Computing. And we want to help put it to work for you today.
SimDesk is, quite simply, establishing a new paradigm of Community Computing which fundamentally eliminates technology barriers to under served communities while satisfying the anywhere, anytime needs of technically adept users equally well.
The digital divide is a known, documented, and growing problem for both developed and developing nations. SimDesk is leveraging the utility computing model on a massive scale to bridge the digital divide in large cities and states across the globe. SimDesk has established community computing as the best example of utility computing today. We are the definitive leader in community computing and are committed to expanding this model as a leading solution to bridge the digital divide.
SimDesk is highly experienced in large-scale projects. Our U.S. programs currently cover 12,600,000 people in two of the four largest cities and one state. We also have been awarded the first contract in a country-wide education initiative in Brazil, where we are providing services which will be available to 450,000 students across 400 schools with potential follow-on projects for over 4,000,000 additional students within the next twelve months.

The company I work for has begun a new initiative to look for federal, state, and foundation money to fund our State and Local projects. We are also looking for key non-profits to partner with in our efforts
Granting bodies don't fund technology -- they fund **missions**. What is the mission of your initiative? As a result of your initiative, what "good" do you hope will happen? Whom does this initiative serve? If you are looking for funding, look for granting bodies that fund iniatives similar to yours, in terms of its goals and whom it serves. For instance, if it serves to help people with disabilities gain access to education and employment opportunities, look for grants that have funded such initiatives in the past -- including those that did NOT use tech.
Also, keep in mind that most granters want to fund local initiatives. Start with the geographic area(s) of your iniative in identifying corporations in the same area, for instance -- most have their funding guidelines on their web sites, under the "about us" section.
Personal note: I was once in charge of the nonprofit funding program at a not-so-famous Fortune 500 company, one that employed a few hundred people, but wasn't a "name" in the area, nor one of the largest employers. The funding program was also small. Still, I was stunned at how few inquiries I got from nonprofits about our funding program -- nonprofits rarely thought of us as a potential funder. Those who did were mostly pleasently surprised.
