Hello Everyone my name is Melissa Jennings. I am a Creative Industries (media & communication) & Business (Public Relations) student at QUT in Brisbane Australia... i was very excited to stumble across your website & then even more to find this discussion list while i was looking for some extra information about the digital divide. It was very odd actually because only a couple of weeks ago i had a set reading to do of the speech that Andy Carvin did called "Beyond Access: Understanding the Digital Divide" at the NYU Third Act Conference back in 2000. & now i happen to find this website that he is the key instigator for it seems.
i thought the reading was very insightful because he spoke of the other reasons (other than access) that lead to the digital divide. It is important to realise these other factors such as literacy (at all levels), and content etc because but when you have been taught that it is mainly about ACCESS the whole time it is interesting to look at these other factors & say oh yeah of course thats right why didnt i think of that before. I noticed that i wasnt the only one thinking this when i had a look through the discussion list archives. i look forward to gaining more of an insight about the digital divide over time through reading and posting in this discussion list.
