That was a pivotal point in ownership that shaped 'intellectual property law' as we know it. Being one of the people who did the Wikipedia remix, I found the whole thing very interesting if you research what Lessig wrote about in his book. It takes Epstein 4 pages to make his points, and it takes Lessig one: http://www.technologyreview.com/articles/05/06/issue/feature_rebuttal.asp I hope Epstein got paid by word instead of by merit. And I'm glad Lawrence had time to respond. We have Lessig saying, "5. Fire Lots of Lawyers" (http://www.easylum.net/node/28 ) and another professor basically saying hire more. We also have two lawyers discussing rights and laws, which is good - but in this particular exchange, neither discussed economics - which is changing law in fundamental ways in countries falling under TRIPs agreements and other WIPO agreements. And a basic economist would tell you that economies that paid their own creators would do better than paying for people to create things externally - something Japan did for a few hundred years. It makes no sense to me walking around with a hammer and smashing people in the knees so that I can sell them crutches or wheelchairs. There's something that, perhaps because of my upbringing, seems inherently wrong with that. If that offends, I apologize for my upbringing and will try to get a note from my parents to excuse me. :-) -- Taran Rampersad Presently in: San Jose, Costa Rica [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.knowprose.com http://www.easylum.net http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/Taran "Criticize by creating." — Michelangelo _______________________________________________ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list [email protected] http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.
