We recently convened the second in the Let's Talk Media series. In addition to the news of the launch of the Illinois Community Technology Coalition on February 16 <http://www.ilctc.org/launch> , the major topic of the evening was Ballot-Integrity <http://www.ballot-integrity.org> . With CTCNet Chicago's commitment to Civic Engagement (or Participation) and the concerns many of us share over recent elections and the integrity of the process we found the issue one that we have something to speak to and it is clearly one that is gaining momentum.
On March 4 there will be a statewide conference on Election reform <http://www.illinoisprogressives.org/pdi/eric.html> in Batavia. We should be there, and we should be hosting public discussions on these issues in our communities. Why? Partly because we believe in social justice, but also because there are technical issues that demand a community based and informed technical perspective. Technology is infused everywhere in our society. There are many myths and misperceptions. We're among the groups speaking in the public interest and for our communities. We have something to say on the public use of technology. We also have something to say on questions of opening up the governance process. It's time to work with community and independent media to shed light on the processes where important decisions are made. Community Technology joins with Community Media in public service in the era of convergent technologies. Much is possible. ____________________________________________________________________________ Michael Maranda President, The Association For Community Networking (AFCN) http://www.afcn.org Executive Director, CTCNet Chicago Chapter http://www.ctcnetchicago.org Co-Chair, Illinois Community Technology Coalition (ilCTC) http://www.ilctc.org Vice President, CAAELII http://www.caaelii.org Vice President, NPOTechs http://www.npotechs.org Support the Illinois Community Technology Coalition. http://www.ilctc.org/ _______________________________________________ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.
