Hi Michael, We use such a hybrid system for all iEARN student and teacher interaction world wide to insure that we do not exclude people who do have easy or inexpensive access to the web. We use a commercial product called "Webcrossing" (that they donate to us as an educational non-profit organization), which allows for nntp/newsgroup and e-mail feeds in and out of a web forum structure.
