The OpenACS (an open source community system toolkit) forums package has the following features available:
- reply-by-email to the forums as well as normal posting to the web page - RSS feeds of the forums - Email notifications, either instant (each message is an email) or batched hourly or daily. - Moderated and unmoderated forum options - Threaded and untheaded forums - It can be implemented to show the user's portrait like Moodle does. - The forums can use a WYSIWYG editor that supports basic html and can allow users to upload and put images into their posts. Just like the mouse with a cookie, this isn't our holy grail, we always strive for more. The latest project is about importing and exporting large mailing list archives and making them searchable. There is also a project that is interested in supporting discussions that are about pictures (a medical mailing list that uses images extensively). http://openacs.org/forums/message-view?message_id=389793 Note not all these features are turned on on openacs.org . There are implementation issues with reply-by-email that make it not for everyone. For instance, vacation messages and email clients that automatically quote everything resulting in very long posts.
