Turns out I probably have the only orphaned HP LJ model.

I have an HP LJ 4000N and whilst it is perfectly functional, printing
systems have decided it is too old to work with properly -- this is a
Windows, Linux and Mac OS X problem.  Backward compatibility is a
three-edged sword.


hplip on Linux should support it when connected via Parallel Port (but, according to a maybe outdated list, not USB or Network/Jetdirect). See also http://www.openprinting.org/printer/HP/HP-LaserJet_4000 :-)
