Scotty, I have done it with VOX. But The cheapest would be just a toggle switch. Some people at the APRPACK Yahoo group have reported that going portable with laptops has more RF and EMI trouble, both from RF getting into the audio through the shields, and hash from the laptop sound card getting into the radio IN and OUT. Ken WB6MLC and Bill K6ACJ and I have been working on an optically-coupled system to minimze cabling that might pick up RF.
If you don't want to throw a switch you might try building a VOX. You can get a Ramsey kit for $10 and put it in a case, or build your own. But you might want to try the switch first just to see if you have RFI or EMI problems before spending the time.
