I find the easiest solution for portable PSK/APRS/Olivia/SSTV is to use a Signalink sound card interface. The SignaLink generates PTT from the audio signal. I've used this interface with my IBM Thinkpad and Winbook Laptops; IC706, FT817, TS450 and it is easy, no fuss, for almost 2 years now.
The audio derived PTT eliminates the need for a COM port or USB/serial interface and connection.
