AMATEUR RADIO GETS FAVORABLE MENTIONS IN FEDERAL KATRINA REPORTS

Ham radio received positive mentions in post-Katrina reports from the US
House of Representatives and the White House. References to the Amateur
Radio Emergency Service (ARES), the Military Affiliate Radio System (MARS)
and the HF digital e-mail system Winlink 2000 appear in "A Failure of
Initiative"--the final report of the Select Bipartisan Committee to
investigate the preparation for and response to Hurricane Katrina (see

Nice post.  Once again, hams from other lands are reminded that at least here in the States, Amateur Radio, while a hobby and pleasent passtime for many (myself included) is also a *service* upon which the public good depends in time of disaster.  In North America we have hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, forest fires, and many other kinds of disasters for which Amateur Radio can and does play a vital role.  I cannot remember a major national disaster, and there have been many in the last 25 years, where Amateur Radio did not play a role in emergency communications.
